The motion design of UEFA EURO 2024

A (not very) brief analysis.

Creating the on-air motion design for a global media event such as the European Football Championship is surely one of the wildest dreams of anyone who calls themselves a motion designer. Presenting your own concept and design to such a large and diverse audience not only brings fame and honor, but also a number of hurdles. The biggest: how can motion design manage to convey information and tell a story at the same time – and all without being extremely polarizing or trivial?

For EURO 2024, we took a closer look at this using two games – we looked at the individual motion design elements, their function and their aesthetics, as well as the underlying brand identity and the associated design principles.

The design principle.

As with the last European Championship, the Portuguese agency VML Branding from Lisbon is responsible for the visual identity of EURO 2024. The sports branding experts have already designed brand identities for other UEFA and FIFA projects.

The very detailed Behance post on EURO 2024 provides a brief history and concept. Inclusion and diversity are the top priorities. The colors and their arrangement next to the trophy in the logo are no coincidence, but represent the different colors of all European flags and their frequency in a clever arrangement that presents each flag once – starting with the German flag as the host nation.

The focus on diversity is also very evident in the illustrations.

People of different ages, genders, skin colors, with and without physical disabilities celebrate the EURO 2024 event together.

The animation principle.

The animation principle is as obvious as it is effective – the colored stripes in the logo are animated lengthwise in the storytelling moments (read: where there is enough time) and thus guide the eye or even through an entire scene.

Where information needs to be conveyed quickly, they are used as a transition element, as salt in the soup, so to speak. This can be condemned as decoration, but it can also be praised as consistent.

The draw.

The first public demonstration of the design also directly reflects an exception – because here the design is already being further developed - by another agency.

The renowned animation studio illo from Italy was allowed to create the background video for the official draw of the group compositions for EURO 2024. They set the colorful stripes from the logo in motion in many other ways and also used patterns that had not (previously) played a role in the on-air design.

And off we go.

Even before the game started, the motion design was able to really perform. Inclusion and diversity are strongly emphasized in the intro and countdown in the form of complex character animation. The theme of flags is used again and again to create transitions, build landscapes and create color in the scenes. The design of the characters is relatively generic, but friendly and approachable - the integration of people with disabilities is what we notice most and very positively, especially because it is prominent but not obtrusive.

Installation.

The first infographic of the game is very tidy and unagitated overall – only the EURO 2024 font on a blue background is actually used. What is interesting, however, is the way the graphics are built up and broken down – the strips already used from the flags are used here, but in the form of a circle.

The quality of the cropped player videos is negative for us - it's nice that no heroic poses are used here, but better quality lighting or even a more creative approach (illustration, like in the intro?) would have been desirable for an event of this size.

Transition.

Whenever there is a cut to a replay, i.e. when real-time reporting is abandoned, this is accompanied by a transition animation at the beginning and end of the replay. The logo is staged for this – a moment in which the effect is in the foreground and no information is to be conveyed. Very sporty, almost American - but very "on brand".

Infoboxes & Lower Thirds.

The info boxes in this game work – like all graphics – with different shades of blue as a background. The fact that only blue is used seems somewhat counterintuitive, even in other games. Based on the colorfulness of the entire concept, it would have been appealing to present different color combinations in the course of the games.

The animation of the info box is appropriate for an infographic that is aware of its "support" role – expected and simple, but well crafted. A pleasant easing and a good speed of all individual elements. Very nice is the up and down animation, which also uses the colored stripes, but in its most reduced form, sort of as a harbinger of the shape building up.

The lower thirds, which introduce players and coaches, work in a similar way. The score is only very rarely faded in or out during the course of the game, but the fan-shaped color animation is also used here.

"Analysis" of the design grid

Very nerdy fact: Overall, you can assume a grid that is loosely based on the Title Safe area.

Logo animation.

We have already seen the long version of the logo animation at the beginning of the intro. It works very nicely with the combination of 3D and 2D animation, in which a fictitious stadium is first created from the familiar colorful stripes and then becomes a two-dimensional EURO 2024 logo when viewed from above. The typography is very restrained and suitably animated. All in all, it doesn't look very competitive, but very friendly, fluffy and fair.

A short version of the logo animation is also used in the game's cutscenes, which works very differently – the stripes in the room that reveal the logo are used here. In contrast to the longer version, it looks more dynamic and combative, but also more generic and less clever.

Conclusion.

The motion design of EURO 2024 unites rather than polarizes. It offers no big surprises but really good animation craftsmanship.

In our opinion, this fits the occasion and the event very well – although it is a competition, the focus here is on interaction. The balance between information and emotion is clearly tipped towards information. The game and the associated data are more important to viewers than an overly opulent design.

Despite this, some motion design still ended up in the final assets. Only the colors of the interfaces could have been a bit bolder. What we really like is the natural use of diversity in the illustrations, which is reminiscent of a contemporary children's book and provides good impetus.
